A Travel Guide to Segovia, Spain

Last week, I went to Segovia, a smallish city about an hour north-west of Madrid, and these are some of my favourite places to go there (in no particular order).

1. El Acueducto (The aqueduct, for those of you who don't speak Spanish). Segovia's most famous landmark is probably the Roman aqueduct that spans the Plaza de Artillería. It was built in the 1st century AD and originally stretched all the way from the mountains of the Sistema Central. It's magnificent and the fact that the stones are held together by nothing but gravity and their own pressure makes this even more impressive.

2. La Catedral de Segovia (The cathedral) Segovia's cathedral is a beautiful Catholic Gothic cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary and located in the Plaza Mayor. It was built in the mid-16th century and houses, I believe, the graves of Saints Fructus, Valentine and Engratia. It has a number of side chapels dedicated to different saints and is truly, truly beautiful - definitely worth the 3€ it costs to get in.

3. El Alcázar. This is the castle that the Disney castle was modelled on! Yes, the one that you see at the start of EVERY Disney movie. It was once used by the Spanish royal family as one of their many homes, and the view from the plaza in front of it is breathtaking, particularly on a clear, sunny, day. You can see across to the Iglesia de la Veracruz (The Church of the True Cross), which supposedly once held a piece of the 'true cross'.

4. Farggi. This café. I spent so much time there - amazing porras (like long doughnuts that you dunk in molten chocolate), really nice waffles and crepes, freshly squeezed orange juice, nice savoury sandwiches, crepes and baguettes, and best FREE WIFI!! Need I say more?

5. ALE-HOP. This shop was the best shop ever because it sold everything and anything under the sun for REALLY CHEAP!

I hope that if any of you ever visit Segovia, you visit all of these places and have an amazing time!!
